This sacrament of healing and salvation is referred to as the sacrament of conversion, confession, Penance or Reconciliation. Through the act of contrition, resolution to sin no more, confession to an ordained priest and satisfaction of penance, the penitent is forgiven by the "grace of God who is rich in mercy." Penance, like all sacraments, is a celebration that unites us more fully to God, the Church and our faith community.
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You.
I detest all my sins, because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they
I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin.
